Hallmark

The process of assessing and confirming the purity of objects made of precious metals, such as gold and silver, in accordance with particular standards established by a regulating agency is known as hallmarking. The product is then stamped with the hallmark or quality mark to attest to its excellence and purity. The procedure entails determining the item's fineness and metal content through assaying or testing, followed by hallmarking or stamping with the proper mark. Hallmarking helps stop fraud and market counterfeiting while ensuring that customers obtain genuine, high-quality precious metal.

A new system of marking jewellery by the BIS includes the purity of the metal, a special identification number, and a BIS hallmark. In 2019, the Indian government mandated that gold jewellery and antiquities be hallmarked. Registered jewellers selling through authorised sales outlets are allowed to sell valuable items of gold marked with hallmarks after acquiring a hallmark registration certificate.

Who shall register BIS Hallmark:
1.    Jewellers or Showrooms: Jewellers who produce or sell gold and silver jewellery must complete this registration type. In accordance with the hallmarking scheme, jewellers are given hallmarking registration by BIS at a particular site. A jeweller who wishes to sell gold jewellery with the BIS hallmark must register the hallmark with the BIS at each of their sales locations. Jewellery can be hallmarked at BIS assaying & hallmarking institutes by jewellers who have received BIS certification.
2.    Hallmarking Centre: In a BIS-certified marking or third-party evaluation facility called a hallmarking centre, the purity of precious metals is checked and stamped. Such centres must be recognised by BIS, and they may do so.
